This no-prep Athens vs. Sparta activity will help your students understand the differences between Athens and Sparta...using data and facts! If you need an activity to kick off your discussion of Athens and Sparta or want a resource that highlights the differences between Athens and Sparta, this is the resource for you!
In this engaging activity, students receive a blank chart with many categories of data and facts about the city-states of Athens and Sparta. Some of these categories include the population, type of government, education, and women’s rights, among other data points. Students are also provided with a word bank of the different data points that they must match up in the correct category. Whether you use the printable or digital version of the resource, students then must use inquiry skills to predict which data points match up with Athens and which ones match up with Sparta. To make this more fun, you can make it a competition and provide prizes to the students who can figure out the correct answers first! After students have had a chance to work through the activity, you can then go over the answers with them using the answer key, followed by the discussion questions.
