    Description

Looking for multiple PowerPoint lessons for a unit on Asia? This bundle of presentations is a great way to enhance your social studies lessons!

    The following lessons are included:

China Political, Historical, Cultural, and Economic Features:

This 77-slide PowerPoint covers almost any topic you would need to address with your students about China. There are links to several videos that help make connections to the material, including a Simpsons clip about outsourcing. Beautiful pictures are used throughout, and there are many opportunities for discussion. Some topics addressed include the Great Wall, isolation, inventions, the economic switch from a command economy to gradually allowing more free markets, advantages and disadvantages of having such a large population, religion, and more. There are opportunities for students to practice critical thinking, map, charts/graphs, and political cartoon analyzing skills. I have also left a few teaching tips and suggestions for questions to ask your class in the notes section of the slides. The PowerPoint ends with several interesting facts about China that my students loved.

Physical Geography of China with Questions:

This is not a traditional PowerPoint in the sense that the information is not presented directly to the student. Instead, each slide has either a map or a chart/graph with questions. This activity is designed so that as the class goes through the PowerPoint and looks at the questions together, students write down their own individual answers on a chart (also provided). After sufficient time is given, volunteers or chosen students provide answers. If a student got a question or wrong or forgot a piece of information, they can add this extra info to a second column in their charts. This lesson is not only great for learning about China's physical geography, but it is awesome for practicing map reading and critical thinking skills as well.

Major Landforms and Water Features of China Annotated Map Lesson:

This PowerPoint provides information about the major landforms and water features found in China. Along with the PowerPoint comes directions for having the students make an annotated map of China as they follow along with the presentation. This keeps the PowerPoint interactive and the kids enjoy it. I have found that having a students draw their own maps as they follow along also helps with retention of the major physical features of China.

Three Gorges Dam Article and Pros/Cons Lesson:

This lesson includes a short PowerPoint introduction to the 3 Gorges Dam, a 2-page article about the dam, and a suggested lesson plan for having students learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the structure. The lesson plan includes the use of a graphic organizer, small groups, heavy discussion, and a writing assignment to be used as the culminating activity. This lesson took me two 50-minute class periods to complete. The article is in Word format, so it can be adjusted if you desire. I also think it is possible to make some changes to the suggested assignment by cutting steps out if you are running short on time.

Physical Geography of India & The Green Revolution:

This is just a very basic introduction to the physical geography of India. Topics addressed in the lesson are the Himalayas, monsoons, the formation of early civilizations in India, plate tectonics, climate, and natural resources of India. There are several opportunities for students to practice map reading skills and discuss the material. Significant attention is given to the Green Revolution and how the new farming techniques affected India. The lesson includes a short video about the Green Revolution and students fill out a graphic organizer as they follow along.

Geography, Politics, Economics & Culture of Japan:

This huge, 85-slide PowerPoint gives almost all of the information you would ever want to teach about Japan. Some topics include Japanese isolation, how physical geography affects daily life, why Japan is such an economic powerhouse, Japanese-American cultural diffusion, and Japanese culture in general. The lesson includes links to a couple of videos, questions for discussion, tons of pictures, and more.

Geography, Culture, Government & Economics of South Korea:

This 51-slide PowerPoint includes everything you and your students need to know about the geography, culture, government, and economics of South Korea. Specific topics addressed include basic facts, location, physical features, regions, weather and climate, natural disasters, history of settlement and modern wars, recent tensions with North Korea, similarities and differences between North & South Korea, human development characteristics, government, government, flag, currency, economics, major industries and exports, natural resources, agriculture, imports and trading partners, robotics, discoveries and inventions, population issues, diversity, language, clothing, arts, food, holidays & birthdays, spots, music, pop culture, tourism, major cities, flora and fauna, and fun facts.
