What educators are saying

I left this resource with a Sub for my art classes and the sub raved about how the students (of all ages) enjoyed this lesson, and how much fun it was for them and the sub. Engaging, and easy for the sub. win- win! Thank you!
I left this for my sub to do with my students. It was easy for them to follow and the kiddos seemed to enjoy it!

Description

Do you need elementary or middle school art sub plans ASAP? How about a fun, no-prep, fully scripted art activity that uses simple materials? Would you like an easy to use drawing lesson you can keep in your emergency sub folder?

If the answer to any of these is, "yes," check out this art sub lesson called, "Silly Sandwich."

In this activity, students use their imaginations to create a drawing of a silly sandwich.

It may be presented as a projected Powerpoint or a printed out .pdf and shown close up. All the sub has to do is read the slides or pages and follow the directions.

The drawing part of the lesson uses the most basic supplies: pencil, crayons or markers, and paper.

I have also added two bonus sections. There is a word search puzzle for those early finishers AND two bonus writing prompts for extending the lesson.

This 20 page lesson was meant to be presented and completed in one 55 minute class, though some teachers prefer to extend it.

This activity is perfect to leave for short or long term absences and for maternity leave.

This PowerPoint or .pdf lesson plan can be printed out and handed to a substitute teacher. You can email it right from home if you need to! You can also use this for distance learning. Works great in Google Meet, Zoom, or something similar.

Written for a sub, it may also be taught by classroom teachers, art teachers, and homeschool teachers.

This is a revised version of this lesson. If you previously purchased this lesson, please download the new version.

Included are:
✨1 page of directions for the substitute teacher
✨12 pages of a visuals, questions, and directions for the student
✨1 page of options for ways the teacher may end the lesson
✨1 page of a word search about sandwiches for early finishers
✨1 answer sheet for the word search

✨2 writing prompts to use if desired

Supplies Needed to Create the Drawing
✎paper, pencil, and crayons or markers

✻ If this is a project being done by distance learning, you could also have students do collages or sculptures with whatever materials they have on hand.

The lesson flows as follows:

  1. Students look at a variety of sandwiches and describe they types they see and what types they like.
  2. Students discuss what they would expect to see on a sandwich.
  3. Students look at the silly things students included in their original drawings.
  4. Students draw the bread with a large space inbetween the two pieces.
  5. Students brainstorm what silly things they would like to put on a sandwich. 6.
  6. Teacher reviews lesson and students may choose to share their work.

Reviews
Here are some recent reviews:

"This was the perfect lesson for me to leave with a sub. The students LOVED this resource and their classroom teacher told me they were now making silly sandwiches all the time!"

"I used the slide show provided and drew one alongside my class in a google meet. The drawings are awesome, super cute and creative. It is one of those projects kids can do at home, as long as they have paper and SOMETHING to draw and colour with."

"I used this for a day I had a sick child at home and had to come up with a last-minute sub art lesson. This was a lifesaver! Thank you!"

"My kids and the sub loved this lesson!"
