Description

Looking for a fun way to review this topic? Students will practice developing and using the concept of arithmetic sequences equation an = a1+(n-1)d. Students draw a card from a deck of cards, then answer the corresponding question in the provided question booklet. Students answer the question on the provided answer sheet, then check with the answer key. This could be used as a partner activity, or individual activity. There are 48 questions in all, separated into 4 categories:

♥ given a sequence of three terms, the student develops the general formula using the arithmetic formula in which d is positive or negative but there are no fractions in the a1,d or the sequence. [ 12 questions ]

♦ Given a1 and d, state the first five terms of the sequence. [ 12 questions ]

♠ Given a sequence with three terms (d is positive and there are no fractions in a or d), determine the general formula for the arithmetic sequence. [ 12 questions ]

♣ Given a1, d and n, determine the nth term of the sequence using the formula. [ 12 questions ]

This is a math game in which one pair of students competes against another. The first team selects a card from a deck of cards and answers the matching question on the activity sheet (example 4 of hearts). The 2 students work cooperatively to obtain an answer. If correct they get a point, if not the other team can get the rebound point. Then team 2 selects a card, discusses the answer and so on. It is cooperative because the 2 students work together, yet competitive because it pits one team against another. The students have fun and get the math work done. As well, the students can work on this activity alone, can be used as a review.
