What educators are saying

These articles were really usesful in giving different points of view on the issue, which enabled my students to write stronger arguments.

Description

When providing students with a rigorous curriculum, educators need engaged topics to keep students motivated and on task. This series of argument essay prompts include topics that were suggested by my high school students.

Each packet is designed to mirror the NY ELA regents. This will allow students to get familiar with the format of the test, with issues that personally effect them. However, these packets can be used by teachers across the country who are working with students to introduce a precise and insightful claim while supporting it with specific and relevant evidence.

Packet Outline:

  • Page 1: Argument essay directions, text titles and lexile levels*, space to plan a claim in response to the topic
  • Pages 2-9: Excerpted text from various news media
  • Pages 10-11: Lines for a written response

*The Lexile Levels are for the teacher's planning purposes. All of the articles included fall within the expected high school lexile range (approximately 1000-1400). For each text set, there is a range of levels so that even students reading below grade level should be able to engage. Depending on the text levels, teachers can decide how much scaffolding their students may need in order to engage with the text.
