What educators are saying

My students with ASD/ADHD who often refuse all work adore this project. They have even added additional math to their projects - giving themselves budgets, planning the area needed for research centers, and discussing operating budgets. Great resource!

Description

This project has TWO versions that both cover area and perimeter of rectangular shapes.

Your students have been hired to design a new theme park, a "Dino Park!" In a make-believe world where scientists have brought back dinosaurs (without disaster...) your students will choose the dinosaurs they feature in their park and design a park layout.

Students will use a "Dino Menu" to see their dinosaur choices and the area required for each habitat. Students will also have to abide by certain rules when deciding which dinosaurs to include to ensure variety and public interest in the park.

Students will fill out a sheet that asks for the perimeter and area of each of their dinosaur habitats as well as the other required buildings in the park.

If you choose, there is also two versions of a "cost analysis" sheet where students use the perimeter and area to calculate the building cost of each habitat! (2 by 1 digital multiplication).

What's Included?:

  • Teacher Notes including ideas for extension lessons and integration
  • 2 versions of a Student Information Sheet (without and with the cost analysis included)
  • 2 versions of a Rubric for Self-Evaluation and/or Teacher Grading (without and with the cost analysis included)
  • "Dino Menu" with required areas
  • Rough Draft Dino Park Design Sheet
  • Final Draft Dino Park Design Sheet
  • Dino Park Statistics Sheet
  • Optional Dinosaur Labels with Art and Names
  • Cost Analysis Sheet Version 1 (Students only fill in totals)
  • Cost Analysis Sheet Version 2 (Guided calculations for each dinosaur)
  • Pictures of example final, stat sheet, and cost analysis sheet

Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
A square with side length 1 unit, called “a unit square,” is said to have “one square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area.
A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by 𝘯 unit squares is said to have an area of 𝘯 square units.
Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
