What educators are saying

This activity was good for error analysis. Using this helped my students focus on the concepts and skills they learned in order to solve problems correctly.
This helped me take my class' learning a step further by having them find the error. It also helped me to see what they understood.

Description

Are students making common errors when multiplying whole numbers using the area model for multiplication? With these differentiated multiplication error analysis task cards, students identify one error on each card and re-multiply whole numbers to find the correct product.

I've included explanations of the common errors I've observed and incorporated these into the multiplication task cards to help students identify and correct the types of errors they may be making with area models.

Included in Area Model Multiplication Task Cards:

✔ 5 sets of task cards with 16 cards for each of the following levels of multiplication:

- 2 digit by 1 digit

- 3 digit by 1 digit

- 4 digit by 1 digit

- 2 digit by 2 digit

- 3 digit by 2 digit

✔ Student recording sheets

✔ Answer keys

Your 80 task cards are organized in 5 levels to allow you to differentiate your students' multiplying whole numbers practice. These are perfect for classrooms with students on varying levels! While great for remediation, teachers have also reported that these cards challenge their most adept students and those who seem to have already mastered the area model for multiplication.

Use these cards for whole group error analysis on an interactive whiteboard or using your document camera, for independent practice to help students learn to look at their own work more objectively, and to help students correct any common errors they have internalized.
