Ansel Adams was born on Feb. 20,1902 in San Francisco.His parents were Charles and Olive. When he was 4 years old, he broke his nose during the 1906 earthquake. It was never fixed which explains his crooked nos.
He was home schooled by his father and his Aunt Mary until he was 9 years old. He went to various schools but did not do well. He was a very nervous and hyperactive kid.

Ansel became interested in piano and taught himself how to play before taking lessons. He wanted to become a concert pianist.
When he was 13, his father bought him a one year pass to San Francisco’s Panama Pacific International Exposition. He went everyday. It was here that he devloped his love for photography.
His parents took him to Yosemite at 14 yrs. old where he started to take pictures with his Kodak Brownie box camera.

When he was grown, he married Virginia Best and worked as a professional photographer. His photographs became works of art. He shot primarily in black and white. Sometimes it would take him a whole day to print a picture the way he wanted it.
He was an environmentalist and was active in the Sierra Club.
In 1980 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He passed away in 1984 at 82 years old.
