Description

I am always looking for ways to bring creativity into science. This project has been a huge success over the years, not only allowing students to have a creative expression but also enabling them to better understand and remember the different tissue types. Although students often doubt their ability to be creative many will tell me after completing the unit test that this project really helped them remember the tissues!

This project is intended to help students improve their ability to recall the structure of the different tissue types, and infer the function of the tissues based on that structure. Students will individually create a 2-D abstract art piece representing one tissue example from each of the four main tissue types: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous.

I generally introduce the project and allow the remainder of the class period for brainstorming and sketching and may allow one or two additional class periods for students to work on their project depending on how much they have accomplished in the first day and the skill level of the class.

Materials needed:

• Poster or large-sized art paper

• Several different art media: pastel chalk, markers, color pencils, crayons, colored paper, water color sets (maybe you can borrow these from the art department)
