“What Makes the Best Play Dough?” - An investigation in Science Practices Based on New Generation Science Standards
The Performance Standards of the New Generation Science Standards are based on the three elements of Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts.
BEST Investigations are designed to introduce elementary students to the Science and Engineering Practices necessary for them to successfully engage in grade level performance expectations. Students are introduced to and then utilize inquiry strategies to determine “what makes the best play dough?”
The unit on “What Makes the Best Play Dough?” requires students to:
• Ask questions and define problems Question and Observe
• Plan and carry out investigations Form a hypothesis
• Record data/develop and use model Investigate
• Construct explanations and design solutions
• Analyze and interpret data Analyze
• Engage in argument from evidence and data Report/Defend Results
This unit includes twelve lessons that introduce students to the elements of the scientific method, along with student activity sheets and a materials list. It also includes a supplemental listing of other “BEST” investigations that can be modified for students from grades 1-5.
