Description

Looking for a short story unit that carefully guides your students to a deep understanding of "All Summer In a Day" by Ray Bradbury? This ready to print short story unit gives your students plenty of practice in reading comprehension, citing textual evidence, and analyzing characterization.

In this unit, your students will cover numerous ELA standards in depth, progressing from literal comprehension to writing full paragraphs with text evidence cited. You will have everything you need, ready to print, to teach a 3-5 day short story unit on "All Summer in a Day."

This Unit Includes:

1. All Summer In A Day: Comprehension.: A lesson designed to help your students with some background knowledge and literal comprehension of this text.

2. All Summer In A Day:Cite Evidence: A lesson on citing textual evidence to make inferences about characters. Students write a full analytical paragraph.

3. All Summer In A Day: Figurative Language: A lesson exploring Bradbury's use of figurative language in the story.

The lessons focus on development of three skills: comprehension, citing evidence to support inferences and analyzing figurative language. The unit contains all student materials, an answer key for each lesson and a rubric for paragraph writing. It is aligned to CCSS anchor standards R1, R4 and W2, specifically to RL 6.1, RL 6.4 and W 6.1.

This resource, due to copyright restrictions, DOES NOT include the text to the story. Included on the handout are the first two sentences and last two sentences of each excerpt, to allow for easy location in the text. It is advised that each student have his or her own copy of the text for easy annotation.

This short story unit is suitable for middle school students at all levels, but includes scaffolded support for students who struggle in writing.

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID....

"This was perfect for our short story unit on Bradbury's writing. After working through the evidence packets, my students were able to then use them as a resource for an essay. It was structured so well to assist all my students. Thank you so much!"

"Wow! My kids got a lot out of the story by doing these activities and the format really pushed them to make connections and expand their answers."

"This entire resource has proved to be invaluable! I have used it during state testing when half of my class is gone taking a test and I needed something for students to work on quietly. I have been able to use it when there was a sub and I needed something to engage and challenge my students. The analysis of this short story is quite flawless. Definitely worth every penny! Thank you!"
