The clipart and images are part of a larger writing product that is available in printable and paperless versions; a separate clipart resource with additional photographs is also available.

More Info:

The prompts are differentiated for students at varying levels of reading and writing proficiency. You can use the clip art and writing prompts when teaching about Africa in a social studies class, when reading African literature in a language arts class, or as a supplement during Black History Month.

The clip art image shows a tray that is used to winnow rice, the staple crop in Sierra Leone. It is in PNG format at 300 dpi and can be used for commercial, classroom, and personal use. Since the image is based on a photograph I took myself, you do not have to worry about copyright issues when using the image in your materials. My complete Terms of Use are also included in this sampler.

The same image of the winnowing tray is the basis for the writing prompts included in this freebie. There are 3 different prompts so readers and writers of varying levels of proficiency can respond to at least one of the prompts:

* English Language Learners at WIDA Level 2 should be able to respond to the easier prompt

* ELLs at higher language proficiency levels can respond to any of the prompts

* Native English speakers can use whichever prompts are most appropriate for them

A list of the ELA Common Core standards that these writing prompts address and an example WIDA Model Performance Indicator are provided in this sampler.

I greatly enjoyed my time in Sierra Leone and am pleased to help you bring a little African culture into your classroom with this freebie sampler!
