What can Africa teach the world about government? Africa's government system has experienced various types of government from democracies to republics to autocracies. This is a comprehensive cooperative activity for students to explore the various governments of Africa while learning or reviewing the government systems. It can also be completed individually if the instructor chooses not to have students work in groups.

The lesson ends with a Big Picture Question: What can Africa teach the world about Government?

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the structure of various African government systems.
  • Compare and contrast African government systems.
  • Decipher the difference between autocracy and democracy.
  • Decipher the difference between parliamentary democracy and presidential democracy, as well as a parliamentary republic and presidential republic.
  • Recognize that lines are often blurred when it comes to government systems and how they are function.

  • Editable PowerPoint: What Can Africa Teach Us About Government? (Teacher may edit as needed)
  • Thorough Instructions including directions for the instructor as well as guiding questions.
  • Student Sheet: What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government?
  • Student Sheet: Country Government Profile research activity. (2 pages)
  • Grading Rubric

This lesson will require research provisions: Internet, encyclopedias, books on Africa focused on government.

SAMPLE OF PROCEDURE:

The students will work in groups of two (2) or three (3) to complete the assignment.

Provide each group/student with a What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government? Have the group read it over together. Students will, then, work in groups to complete the Country Government Profile guide sheet, examining the structure of a government chosen by the student/group. They will use the What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government? in which to refer when needed during the Country Government Profile. Give the students approximately 30 minutes to complete the activity.
