Description

This packet is designed to help students build fluency with addition and subtraction facts while also mastering CCSS 1.OA.D.8: Determine the unknown number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.

First grade students need scaffolded experiences to develop this skill. This pack includes 144 equation cards that can be used for partner work and/or for Scoot games. The cards are presented in 6 levels of increasing complexity.

Each set of cards is presented on a different black and white background. Each level includes 24 true/false equation cards and an answer key. The Scoot recording sheet for student use is also included.

The Scoot Games and Partner Work Task Cards are:

Addition within 10

Subtraction within 10

Mixed +/- within 10

Addition within 20

Subtraction within 20

Mixed +/- within 20

For partner work, I have kids take turns choosing a card and telling their partner what number they think will complete the equation. If the two partners do not agree right away, they explain their thinking and reasoning to one another. If needed, they can also “prove it” using manipulatives. Once they have come to an agreement, they write their answer on the recording form. When they have completed the set, they use the answer sheet to check their work.

Kids can also work independently. They can either check their own work using the answer sheet ~ or hand it to you as a quick assessment.

I hope you find this packet helpful! : ) Anne Gardner, Common Core Connection

** Do your students need practice with word problems with 3 addends? Here's a set to check out: Addition Word Problems with Three Addends ~ Includes Bonus Questions with Each Problem.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
