In my classroom, I love to teach students many strategies for adding and subtracting numbers. I want my students to be flexible problem solvers and know that there is not just one way to solve a problem. When I introduce a new strategy, I model the strategy whole group. I show examples using the strategy, then give the students time for guided practice. We add the poster to our strategy wall for students to reference throughout the year. During number talks and other times when we are sharing our math thinking, students can reference the strategy wall and use math vocabulary to discuss what strategies they used to solve a problem.
