What educators are saying

This resource teaches students the exact mental addition and subtraction strategies they need to quickly master their facts. I use this resource with all the students I tutor. Should be used in the regular class with all students as these strategies are necessary.
This was awesome! My kids used it in centers to quiz each other and then enjoyed the challenge of timed tests on Fridays. They tracked their progress through a graph and were really motivated to improve their score each week ! Thanks!

Description

Tired of finding math drills that don't necessarily align with the strategies that you're teaching? Tired of wasting paper by having to use a whole paper for one 25-question drill?

I've created weekly math drills that align with 11 specific addition and subtraction strategies. Students practice these specific strategies daily during this one minute math drill. Unfinished questions go home for homework! We learn one new strategy per week! I've used these in my class and I'm seeing incredible progress!

The following product includes:

Eleven weeks of drills that teach 11 different strategies. Each drill page has 5 drills - one for each day of the week. Students practice the same strategy for 5 consecutive days! Answer keys included!

Eleven information pages that explain the strategy in detail and show exactly which math facts the specific weekly strategy applies to in the event that families want to make flashcards at home! I copy these information pages on the backs of the drills so that parents can have a better understanding of the strategies that we're learning each week.

One parent letter explaining the drills, the routine, and how to support their child's learning at home.

Strategies Include:

*Counting On for Addition(+)

*Counting Back (-)

*Counting On for Subtraction (-)

*Doubles (+)

*Making Ten (+)

*Doubles Plus One (+)

*Doubles Plus Two (+)

*Plus Ten (+)

*Minus Ten (-)

*Plus Nine (+)

Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
