This 5th Grade Fractions Unit includes two lessons on adding & subtracting fractions with LIKE denominators first. This is where students build a foundational understanding of what it means to add or subtract fractions (aka DO NOT ADD THE DENOMINATOR!). Students practice simplifying fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers, and solving addition & subtraction word problems. We nail down these basics and then introduce unlike denominators.
What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?
- Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format. A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time. This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
- Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty. We meet students where they are, regardless of level. As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder. Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
- Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!
