Description

Add Fractions with Unlike Denominators

I used this Powerpoint in my classroom over two days.

On the first day I reviewed adding fractions with like denominators. I focused on vocabulary like common multiples, least common multiples, and common denominators. I used the foldable vocabulary page.

On the second day we began the challenge of adding fractions with unlike denominators. I used the foldable page that taught the steps for adding fractions with unlike denominators.

During both days I had the students do the practice problems on their white boards.

The Powerpoint goes breaks each topic into step by step instructions and allows the students to attempt the skill on their paper, white board, or on the provided foldables. Two Foldables can be printed from the Powerpoint so students can keep track of the steps, attempt an example, and write down the strategy.

I showed this Powerpoint on my Smart Board.

Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
1. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.

After we learned to add fractions with different denominators, we moved on to Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators. After using these PowerPoints, my students had independent practice using my Add and Subtract Fractions with Different Denominators Bundle which contains :

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
