Description

Help your students review active and passive voice in this engaging Trashketball game! In the first round, students write whether the sentences are in active or passive voice. In round two, they write whether the sentences are in active or passive voice and then write the “doer” (subject) of the action. In the third round, students rewrite the sentences, changing them from passive to active voice. (Updated version now has a link to a Google Slides Presentation.)

All that you need to play is the ability to project a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation, a soft ball, dark tape, and a trash can. Although it’s optional, you may want to provide prizes for the winning team. Additionally, you may want to require students to take notes during the review slides at the beginning of the presentation.

The Power Point and Google Slides presentations include the following:

  • concept review
  • game play
  • game rules for students
  • teacher instructions
  • answer key

Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this activity motivates students further by tapping into their love of sports. Using heterogeneous groups to play a game with friendly competition is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success.

This activity makes excellent guided practice after instruction for active and passive voice. Then, consider following the game with independent practice to extend your students' learning.
