Description
Action pictures for sentence building is a SAMPLE set of everyday actions
with real life photos. An action is the movement of a person or an object.
This set focuses on the basic sentence pattern of Agent + Action + Object.
Use the AAC Semantic Symbols which go with each photo. The use of Semantic Symbols is a strategy to help students identify elements in the photo & provide a clue for building a sentence in sequential order. For that reason the target photo remains as the action. There are 2 sets of action cards. One set has the Semantic Symbols and the other set is just the picture. Cut out one or both sets of pictures Model Model Model actions and act out when you can.
1.Identify actions – start with actions you can act out, e.g., model using a ball to throw, catch, roll, bounce. Then use the pictures to name an action and have student match the picture and act out again. Match pictures to AAC photo & picture board or Match 2 pictures the same. Then have student identify picture in a field of 2-6 pictures. When the picture is found, put an object on the picture. I like using a game with pieces, e.g., Banana Blast, Tic Tac Tony, mini objects, etc. Then at the end of the activity student can play a game.
2.Label actions – Have child tell you What’s happening in a picture or have them tell you a story about the picture. After they label the story then point to the Semantic Symbols under the photo to help sequence the story. Please note that some pictures have a neutral gender of kid. This is when you can use the WHO question card so student can choose the gender. If the sentence only has 2 words, is or are is put in the sentence. Make an action picture book – fold tagboard - glue on pics – kids can take home for practice.
