    Description

    This Bundle includes the following resources / lessons:

    LESSON #1: This is the first editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson plan in a series of three lessons. It introduces the problem & solution genre and how it conforms to the five-paragraph essay structure. It provides a model essay for analysis. The model essay deals with the problem of plastics in our oceans and proposes three potential solutions.

    The general structure of an academic essay is reviewed.

    Students are reminded that the introduction should hook the reader, map out where you are going with the essay, and directly state a thesis.

    The body paragraphs should each have a topic sentence and supporting details that support the thesis.

    The conclusion should signal the end of the writing, summarize the main points, restate the thesis, and share a concluding thought.

    This lesson teaches students the importance of convincing the audience of the importance the problem, where that is placed in the essay, and how this essay genre fits the with notion of academic argument. It includes table for model essay analysis and graphic organizers to help students brainstorm their own essay.

    LESSON #2: This is the second editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson plan in a series of three lessons. It reviews the problem & solution genre and how it conforms to the five-paragraph essay structure. It reviews the approach to problem & solution essays that was covered in the last lesson (dealing with well-known and commonly accepted problems). It also contrasts problem & solution essays with cause & effect essays.

    This lesson introduces a new approach to this genre of essay writing - dealing with controversial problems. It also provides a model essay for analysis on the topic of gun control. Tables and checklists are provided for model essay analysis.

    Students will also engage in peer review of their homework from the last lesson and begin to brainstorm new problem and solution essays on a controversial topic.

    LESSON #3: This is the third editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson plan in a series of three lessons. It reviews the problem & solution genre and how it conforms to the five-paragraph essay structure. It reviews the approach to problem & solution essays that was covered in lesson two of this unit (dealing with controversial problems). The general structure of an academic essay is reviewed.

    This lesson introduces a new approach to problem & solution essay writing - dealing with a well-known problem and focusing on a single solution to that problem. It also provides a model essay for analysis on the topic of racism. Tables and checklists are provided for model essay analysis.

    Students will also work through graphic organizers to brainstorm new problem and solution essays on a controversial topic.
