Description

Book Club is a great way for students to select readings of their own choice that have appeared on AP Literature essay prompts.  I like to do these activities on Fridays as it gives students something to look forward to each week, and it gives students more time to read.  If these lesson plans are completed on Fridays (or your preferred day of the week), students have six weeks to read whichever book they select. Throughout the course of their work, students will encounter adaptations of eight former AP Literature essay prompts, practice writing opening sentences each week, practice annotating and close reading, as well as learn to read through a lens.  While you will be able to check their progress weekly by dropping in on their discussions, you will also have the opportunity to help them improve their essay-writing skills with a provided essay outline, analytical paragraph structure, and a group essay with grading rubric. Each group member will have individual responsibility as well as contribute to the whole but will not be penalized if other group members do not complete their work.  This is a nine-day unit intended to be completed one day per week, but it can be used repeatedly throughout the year to instill the sought-after love for life-long reading. Also available in my AP Literature Intro!
