Description

In order to prepare students for the exam, I teach students to identify the types of questions the AP exam will ask and how to attack them.

I have my students review the types of questions and then give them short passages taken from Applied Practice or you can take passages from released AP exams. I have provided examples as a reference.

The first couple of times I start this, I just have students identify the type of question only. Once they can identify the types of questions quickly, I will then have them attempt to answer the questions. The following is the format I use:

Lesson 1: Pass out Types of AP Multiple Choice Questions handout. Review types of questions with students. Pass out first passage and model how to ONLY identify the types of questions for students. Pass out a second passage and have students ONLY identify the types of questions on their own. I usually give them about 30 seconds per question. Review with students.

Lesson 2: Have students review Types of AP Multiple Choice Questions handout again. Have students review previous two passages. Pass out new passage and have students ONLY identify types of questions. I give them about 30 seconds per question. Review with students. At this point if you feel like the students are identifying the types of questions correctly, move on to having students identify AND answer the questions the next time. If you feel students are still not identifying questions correctly, do another lesson of ONLY identifying types of questions until you feel students have mastered identifying questions.

Lesson 3: Once students have mastered identifying questions, pass out the next passage and have students identify AND attempt to answer. I give students one minute a question. The AP exam usually has about 55 multiple choice questions and students get 1 hour to complete the multiple choice section of the exam. After students have attempted to identify AND answer the questions, review the answers with them. I take it one step further and then have students justify their answers that they answered incorrectly. I have provided specific examples of how the students justifications should look like in my examples

I like to have students justify their answers like this so they can understand WHY their answer was incorrect and WHY the correct answer is correct.

I try to do this with students once a week.

I have quarterly pacing guides on TpT with the assignments and materials I use in my AP Lit and Comp class if interested.
