What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource. It provided excellent guidance to help them write their capstone reflections.
This worked really well. I was able to incorporate for practice and the students thought it was useful.

Description

TEACHER NOTES:

This is what I use to introduce to my students the suggested components for each essay type for AP Lang (Rhetorical Analysis, Argumentative, and Synthesis). While some may argue that this may be formulaic, I say our students need the basics first before learning how to manipulate the style and organization of

their essay. :)

Something that I use is “Says, Means, Matters” and you may see it appear in the outlines as “s/m/m.” You can Google search a few examples but it is essentially a rule of thumb - for any evidence you provide, give at least 2 sentences of analysis.

I introduce the rhetorical analysis essay first because they have exposure with the terms from their summer assignment and beginning of the year work (learning to annotate, introduction to analysis, etc.) then move into argument and then synthesis which is argument but the evidence must be from the sources provided.

Feel free to manipulate these outlines as you please. Good luck!
