Description

This is a guiding document for anyone planning to teach AP Language Composition. In this document you will find 10 units of study (outlined below) with real student samples collected at the end of each unit.

What is included for each unit:

1. Unit focus areas (skills addressed/alignment to AP)
2. A list of usable texts, many of which can be found online
3. Culminating assessments and essay questions.
4. Real student samples from last year. The student samples will help teachers identify appropriate scaffolding and backwards mapping.

Note that daily lesson plans aren't included here, as this is more meant to be a big-picture planning guide.

The Units You'll Find:

1. The Things They Carried,
2. Bilingualism and Identity (Synthesis Unit)
3. The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
4. Stereotypes (Synthesis Unit)
5. Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
6. Monuments and Memorials (Visual Rhetoric)
7. Macbeth
8. Satire
9. George Orwell & 1984
10. AP Test Prep.

I also included a course overview at the top.

I created this document to share with teachers at my school that were about to begin teaching the course.

If it matters: I teach this course at an inner-city charter school. So, the materials are rigorous, but are also intended to reach students at a variety of levels and help them prepare for the rigor of an AP exam.

I'm more than happy to offer clarification or additional resources if something in the guide doesn't work for you. Just reach out to me!
