Description

This 65-page workbook for A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness includes vocabulary work, comprehension work, TEN literature exercises (POV, symbolism, theme...), crossword reviews, and a final assessment. This novel study is available in print and digital (with Google Slides), AND HAS A COMPATIBLE MODIFIED VERSION adapted with word banks, hints, and a differentiated plot exercise. Key included.

For PRINT ONLY, click here for the black + white PDF resource.

WORKBOOK CONTAINS:

  • COVER PAGE + TABLE OF CONTENTS (3 pages)
  • VOCABULARY WORK (7 pages): There are scaffolded activities for 16 vocabulary terms. Work includes: definition matching, synonyms & antonyms, word work, correct usage vs nonsense, and fill-in-the-blank usage.
  • CHAPTER WORK (32 pages): Chapters are short so readings are divided into pairs, with chapter work after each set. Each set has TWO pages of work, which includes fill-in-the-blank chapter summaries, and 6-7 follow-up comprehension questions (short answer, T/F, and multiple choice). The summaries and comprehension work great as study guide tools, small group activities, class discussions, or to ensure independent reading comprehension.
  • TEN LITERATURE SKILL EXERCISES (14 pages): There's a literature exercise after every four chapters. Skills include: figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification), conflict, making inferences, point of view, symbolism, motif, theme, and plot. There's also a word cloud activity (reinforces symbolism, theme, & motif), and a movie vs book comparison guide.
  • REVIEW ACTIVITIES (6 pages): There are two crossword puzzle activities at the end. One reviews vocabulary terms, and the second reviews comprehension for the entire book. Great test-prep activity! Links included for digital/paperless puzzles.
  • END-OF-BOOK TEST (6 pages): 45-question final assessment included. Questions are multiple choice and T/F.

The workbook is available as a black + white PDF, convenient for printing. It's also available as a full-color PDF for those who have the ability to share PDFs digitally, like with Kami, or if you'd like to upload all or portions to EASEL by TpT. I've converted the color workbook into Google Slides with text boxes and moveable pieces already in place. No prep for you! This is a convenient feature for digital learning or for those who prefer a paperless option.

A MODIFIED version in print and Google Slides is included for SPED and struggling learners. Adaptations include adding word banks for fill-in-the-blank chapter summaries on the bottom of pages, hints for the figurative language & movie vs book exercises, suggestions for the word cloud activity, and a differentiated plot exercise using multiple choice options in lieu of writing summaries. Students who’d benefit from modified curriculum can complete this COMPATIBLE version along side peers completing the regular version. This novel is a great choice for middle school and high school students due to its mature content, but still works great for SPED students because it has a lower lexile reading level. The workbook caters to all learners.

NOTE: The zip file contains PDF documents for printing and two links that will prompt you to "make a copy" of Google Slides. Slides will download right to your Google Drive. Google account required for this feature.
