Description
We can busy ourselves with living or with dying. ~Sonja 177
Greetings,
Get ready to meet a crusty character – Ove. You’ll laugh and cry. You’ll cheer and shudder. You might even want to throw your book at him from time to time, but as you get to know his story, he will grow on you. Other feisty and courageous characters will too. Together, they will win your heart and teach you a thing or two about what’s important and how to look out for one another. Who knows? There could even be an epiphany or lifelong friendship in store. And you might not look at a curmudgeon ever again in the same way.
Six possible evaluations are provided in this novel resource, and they cover all four strands and are rooted in critical and creative thinking: oral, reading, writing, and media. The 53-page seminar process drives the novel study along with a 27-page student workbook which addresses big questions and promotes peer learning and class discussion. The gem in the resource is one of the most memorable and transformative activities I ever used – the Conversation of a Lifetime. You will likely add it to your teaching toolbox and use it in other courses. It’s that good.
Two movie versions (Swedish and American) have been made of the novel, and the movie is a valuable supplement, but not a substitution for the novel. Combined, they pack a double punch like those of Ove and Rune, and deepen the total learning experience. The debate option furthers this noble integrative end, and sharpens the wits and oral communication skills.
Time to meet Ove: family, friends, and foes.
