What educators are saying

This is an awesome resource with tons of different activities. I am a special education teacher but I want my students to experience the same novel studies that their peers are studying. This resource is so helpful in making that happen.
Fantastic resource! This was my first time organizing a novel study unit and this was a great resource to have and use in the classroom!

Description

A Long Walk to Water is a novel by Linda Sue Park that is set in Sudan, Africa, and details the lives of Salva and Nya. This print and digital A Long Walk to Water novel study is perfect for struggling readers as it includes prereading activities, comprehension questions, review games, assessments, graphic organizers, rubrics, and answer keys.

⭐️⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I used this book with my 5th grade language group. They were captivated by the story and the unit plan assisted their digging deeper into the book. It was just enough work to not be overwhelming to them in addition to their classwork, but ensure they "got something" from the book that boosted vocabulary, comprehension, compare/contrast, etc." - Jennifer S, 5th grade teacher

My grade 8 special education students read this book independently, but this packet was used with my lower-level readers because their levels vary. Students were on a third-fourth grade reading level. It follows the same questioning in my other packet (link is below); however, questions are reworded within the packet and on the assessments so students can better comprehend and answer questions. You can, as I have, use this in tandem with my other packet.

How to use this novel study in your classroom:

  • Complete this novel study as a whole class activity. Start with the prereading activities, then introduce the novel to your students. Next, you can use either the chapter questions or chapter organizers to help students break down important concepts. Finally, assess students throughout the reading of the novel to gain their understanding.
  • Have students use this novel study in small groups. Students can read the novel together or independently and use the activities in class to assess comprehension.
  • Read the novel together in class and have students work on the various activities at home to assess understanding.
  • Summer reading packet
  • End of the year reading
  • Class read aloud
  • Literature circles
