Description

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR for something to honor our fallen soldiers, then this 9/11, Veteran's Day & Memorial Day Tribute  will get your 5-7th graders thinking about those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

FIRST and FOREMOST,  9/11, Veteran's Day & Memorial Day Tribute  includes a PBL 9/11 Web Quest, & Photo Journalism activity for collaborative groups that is challenging, exciting and fun. It should also be noted that the project will engage your class in a realistic activity to help them better understand the true meaning of heroism.

TWO BROTHERS, John and Joe Vigiano, the former a police detective, the other a fireman, both heroes who lost their lives in 9/11. Even though I never met them, they still mean a lot to me as they’re part of my family, my cousin’s wife is their cousin. Therefore, I’m dedicating this 911 activity to them and to those who sacrificed so much on that horrific day.

THE VETERAN'S DAY & MEMORIAL DAY activities are indeed personal to me since they focus on a caring, honest and brave young man whom I taught in 6th grade. Capt. Andrew Pedersen Keel, one of my students who made the ultimate sacrifice when he lost his life in Afghanistan.

MOREOVER AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, MY HOPE is for your students to gain empathy for those who fought and lost their lives so that we could keep our freedom in this 911, Veterans Day & Memorial Day tribute.

AS EDUCATORS, we know:
✎ It’s important for our students to remember our veterans.
✎ We don’t want their sacrifices to be forgotten.
✎ Many kids have family members who served.
✎ It’s important to make it real for the students.
✎ PBL helps students better understand the content and retain it
    longer than the traditional approach.
✎ Collaborating with others helps build character.

HERE"S WHAT OTHER TEACHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT THIS RESOURCE

♥"Wonderful resource! My kids love it!" Sue D.
♥"Great resource!" Sharon L.

I HAVE ANDREW’S PICTURE on my wall because I never want to forget him and I'm sure I won't, admittedly, he was one of my favorites. Yep, he was a scooch, a typical boy who questioned everything and wanted to know why we had to do this or that. Obviously, he was a challenge, however, I love kids like that. By the same token, he was an honor student who studied hard and played even harder. In addition, he was a true friend who truly cared about his classmates.

Without a doubt, it's exceedingly important to help your students show kindness, empathy and compassion since you never know what the future will bring. Always take the time to get to know them, and let them know how much you care.

Oh, in case you’re wondering, I’m still in touch with Andrew's mother, as we've become close friends. She is now a Gold Star mom and  involved in many things to keep his memory alive. Needless to say, her heartbreak will never go away and neither will mine.
