Description

This lesson teaches students eight different strategies to write a topic sentence. The strategies deviate away from the overused "start with a question" or "The topic is _____" that teachers often find in student writing. The lesson allows student practice time with each strategy so that they can gain experience writing topic strong topic sentences for a variety of writing types. Once students understand the role of topic sentences, the remainder of their writing will fall into place with guided support. Thus, writing a strong topic sentence is an important objective in the overall task analysis of writing.
