Description

These root words, prefixes, and suffixes worksheets for 5th and 6th grade are based on our rap song about Phillis Wheatley, a Black female author.

Students will listen to the song then use the song's lyrics as a reading passage with prefixes and suffixes to identify root words and affixes in the text. Additional activities are detailed below.

The song for this activity explores Wheatley's challenges during the American Revolution and the communication between her and General Washington during the war.

Teach reading skills to your students in a way that they will enjoy!

Kids love music and will certainly enjoy analyzing Wheatley's letter to General Washington, her impact on him, and his response to her while practicing reading comprehension, root word, and affixes skills. The song uses the exact letter Wheatley wrote to Washington and his corresponding letter to her, so it contains rich content-vocabulary words for practice.

How to use this resource:

- Students will preview the questions on page 1 then listen to the song while following along with the lyrics on pages 2 and 3.

- Students will then answer the questions on page 1.

- When students are done, they can continue to be engaged by completing the root words, prefixes, suffixes, and short response activities on pages 4 - 8.

- Review the root words activities on pages 4 and 5 before allowing students to continue to the prefixes and suffixes activities. The activities on pages 6 and 7 build on previous knowledge from the root words activities.

- The answer keys are located on the final pages of the PDF download.
