Description

Are you looking for engaging figurative language through song lyrics worksheets for 5th and 6th grade? Rap music is the answer!

Based on our History of Hip Hop and Rap song, these activities will keep your students' attention using song lyrics as a reading passage while they practice figurative language skills.

*Listen to the song with the video preview above!*

Students will listen to the song then use the song lyrics as a reading passage to identify examples of figurative language in text.

The song for these activities takes an in-depth look at how Hip Hop culture and rap music formed in the Bronx, New York. The song uses similes, metaphors, and Hip Hop terminology to explain the development of Hip Hop and rap music in the Bronx and contains many examples of figurative language.

These activities include:

- the song lyrics for use as a reading passage

- a link to listen to the song with subtitles for students

- 6 multiple-choice, figurative vs. literal language questions based on the song lyrics with the answer key

- 6 multiple-choice, identify the meaning of figurative sentences questions based on the song lyrics with the answer key.

How to use these activities:

- Explain figurative and literal language using the instructions on page 1. Provide your own examples or ask for examples of each type from the class if necessary.

- Next, have students listen to the song while following along with the lyrics on pages 2 - 4.

- Guide students through answering question 1 as a class. Review with them as necessary.

- Students will now answer the remaining 5 multiple-choice questions.

- Students will then complete the activities for identifying the meaning of figurative sentences on pages 5 and 6.

- The answer keys are located on pages 7 - 9.
