Description

Creating New Substances is a 5E lesson plan designed to align with NGSS 5-PS1-4. This phenomena-based lesson will enable the students to recognize when a new substance is created, and to teach them the phenomena that occurs when it happens. Students will be asked to record phenomena on a Scientific Evidence Gathering Sheet.

Each section and activity contain their own set of detailed Teacher Notes to provide you with additional information and instructions for accessing the files and performing the steps for that section.

This lesson first gives the students a foundation to recognize the difference between physical and chemical changes. It then leads their learning into how mixing two or more substances together can result in the formation of new substances.

The 5E Process

Five Steps to this 5E Lesson are as follows:

Step 1 Engagement: A PowerPoint Presentation with two video clips, is designed to start the students thinking about where a change can occur that creates a brand-new substance.

Step 2 Exploration: Four engaging Exploration activities are provided. Students may do either a hands-on experiment or watch a video of the experiment. Either way, students must record their observations on an Evidence Gathering Sheet and use the evidence from their observations to justify their conclusions.

Step 3 Explanation: This section includes vocabulary exercises and a science literacy reading passage titled “When Does the Mixing of Two or More Substances Result in a New Substance?”. The reading passage has been measured to be at the 5th grade level and includes questions and an answer key.

The reading first covers the difference between physical and chemical changes, and then covers the mixing of substances and production of new substances. The vocabulary section includes a word wall, crossword puzzle and a word find activity.

Step 4 Elaboration: The purpose of this Elaboration is to expand and reinforce what the students have learned in the Exploration and the Explain sections. Twenty-one phenomena-based picture cards are provided for the students to analyze on a handout. The students will use what they have learned to identify whether a chemical reaction has occurred to create a new substance. An answer key is included.

Step 5 Evaluation: Students will be asked to read a short passage about a little boy who creates a new substance, and his know-it-all-brother who is not impressed. The students will need to identify the evidence that a new substance was created, and write an argumentative essay using the lesson’s vocabulary.
