What are teachers saying about these Numerical Expressions Worksheets?

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I loved that this lesson provided lots of practice and differentiation!”

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students always have challenges with this standard. They felt confident after using this resource!”

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This was such a great resource to use in my lesson! My kids who work faster were able to work ahead in the packet, while I could focus on students who were still not understanding the material.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Everything you need to teach this standard.”

What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?

  • Each of Sally’s packets follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!

How can I use these Writing Expressions Worksheets?

  • Supplement your core curriculum
  • Reteach or review unit
  • Small group math intervention
  • Tutoring or homeschool
  • Test-prep unit

What type of questions can I expect to find in these Writing Expressions Worksheets?

  • In this packet students are given a numerical expression and asked to write a verbal phrase to go with it- such as 3 x (57 + 18) -> three times the sum of fifty-seven and eighteen
  • They are also given a verbal phrase and asked to write the matching numerical expression- such as ten less than the product of two and five -> (2 x 5) - 10
  • Students complete several matching tables where the write the letter that corresponds to the verbal phrase or the numerical expression (this makes it quicker allowing them to get more practice in a short spurt of time)
  • The problems slowly grow in difficulty so that all students in your classroom will reach a point where they feel challenged, but everyone walks away with enough practice to master this standard!

In addition to the deliberate scaffolding, these numerical expressions include an instructional guide jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices.  There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make.

These 5th Grade Writing Expressions Worksheets are common core aligned to fifth grade standard 5.OA.2 (writing numerical expressions from verbal phrases).

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.
