Description
Classifying and understanding the attributes of two-dimensional shapes can help your fifth graders escape the Great Pyramid of Giza. This QUICK digital escape room (designed to be completed in under 30 minutes) is a fun and engaging way to practice 5th grade geometry skills for standard 5.G.B.3. Four fun puzzles await in this fully automated online breakout. Students will race to find a code by solving five true and false puzzles in which they think critically attributes of 2D figures. A password to open a box is found by classifying a variety of shapes and understanding that attributes of a category also apply to subcategories. Next, students sort polygons into a Venn Diagram according to whether they are parallelograms, have at least one right angle, or both. Finally, students choose the correct door in a series of five multiple choice triangle-classification questions along with questions that challenge them to think about the hierarchy of two-dimensional figures.
The online breakout is automated by a Google Form™, and can be completed by anyone with an internet connected device (Google™ accounts are NOT required). There is one recommended page to print to help students work through the puzzles. There are no clues to hide, and the activity is self-checking. - Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. The escape room is automated by a Google Form™, but does not require the teacher or students to have Google™ accounts.
- How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. This is designed to be a QUICK escape room. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (10-15 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take about 25-30 minutes. Requiring students to use the recording form will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles.
- Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
- Can this be used for distance learning? Yes! Digital escape rooms are perfect for in-person, virtual, or hybrid models!
