Description

5th Grade Multiplication & Division Project! Decimal multiplication & division AND whole number multiplication & division! Project Based Learning! Digital versions included! Compatible with Google Classroom! Includes links to Google Slides versions of the project! Math story problems for fifth grade! Differentiated Project!

Your students always want to know when they are going to use math in the real world! They also love dreaming about what they will be when they grow up! This project is a great combination of these two ideas! Students get to choose a career path and see how that job uses multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals in the real world!

This project is perfect for fifth grade students working on application of multiplication and division skills! It includes single-step and multi-step problems. It also shows multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals in a variety of different contexts. This project focuses primarily on decimal operations, but there are some large whole number problems included as well.

In this project, students choose the job that sounds most interesting to them and then they complete the project on the pages designated for that career choice. The career choices include doctor/nurse, architect/builder, delivery driver and chef. Each job includes 7 pages of fun and engaging multiplication and division practice. A description of the 7 pages is listed below:

  • One page of story problems of possible multiplication/division situations for that job
  • A one-page extended story problem task
  • A two-page math task about a scenario someone with that job might encounter
  • A two-page math task where the student is put into the role of that job
  • A fun page where students get to take ownership of the career choice and create/design something related to their job choice

This project works great for independent practice, small groups, a distance learning project, an end-of-unit project, an early finisher option, a review project and more! At the end you can have a “career fair” where students can showcase their work in that particular career!

This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of multiplication and division decimal and whole number practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice! All career choices are included in both version of the project and both levels are aligned to standards 5.NBT.A.4, 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6, 5.NBT.B.7, 5.MD.C.5 (and level two is aligned to 6.RP.A.3c). Level One has one notebook at the bottom of the page and Level Two has two notebooks at the bottom of the page.

  • Level One includes multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals to the tenths place, with mostly one and two-step story problems.
  • Level Two includes multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place, with mostly multi-step story problems, many of which require visual models to solve. Some larger multiplication problems include (for example: 3-digit by 2-digit).

There is also a digital version included which is compatible with Google Classroom, so this is a great option for distance learning! You can also choose to have students try the project using all four career choices and decide at the end which one they liked the best but keep in mind that each career choice 7 challenging pages! All together this project includes 30 pages of engaging multiplication and division application practice!

This project is Version 1 (Multiplication and Division), in a three-part project series. Check out the other two projects with the links below!

Resource opens as a ZIP file and includes a printable (PDF), and a digital (Power Point) version of the resource. The digital version is compatible with Google Slides. Also, includes links to Google Slides versions of this resource!

I hope your students enjoy this engaging and rigorous differentiated math project!
