Description

Concepts:

This worksheet teaches students to identify and write the five main types of chemical reactions: synthesis (direct combination), decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion. The first 13 reactions provide the reaction type and a partial equation (either reactants or products) for students to complete. The last five reactions harken back to the equation writing question that was common on the older AP chemistry test. Students are told the reactants (or the reactant) and from that information they must write the balanced chemical equation and classify the reaction.

I use this worksheet to reinforce classifying reactions, balancing equations and writing formulas for ionic compounds. It also gives student practice working with the diatomic elements. Having a list of common ions, like the one on this free periodic table, is useful.

Design:

This lesson is super easy to implement! Simply copy this single-page pdf document and hand it to your students. Or add the next worksheet to the back to save paper. This assignment contains instruction for those who may have been absent for the lesson. There is a practice problem on the worksheet, too. All required formulas are included. No long lesson plan or teacher instructions needed. :-)

The worksheet includes a QR code linked to a student solution page where students will find answers to select problems so they can get feedback while they are working. Also Included is a printable teacher answer key for you and your TAs.

These worksheets are a great way to enhance your instruction, to offer practice problems in class, or to do as homework. And no textbook is required! This assignment also makes an excellent sub plan so your students don't lose ground when you are gone.
