Hocus Pocus Movie Guide + Activities (Grades 7-12)

This 14 page movie guide with additional activities accompanies the film "Hocus Pocus (1993)".

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

    • PART 1 – There are 5 questions about witches that need to be completed within 20 minutes. Afterwards discuss as a class getting opinions from the students about witches. Talk about the Salem witch trials here too.

    • PART 2 – Students to read the passage about the Salem Witch Trials and then complete 10 reading comprehension questions.

    • PART 3 – There are 30 comprehension questions altogether. I have made two sets for differentiation. One set is multiple choice with 3 possible answers, and the other is full sentence answers. In chronological order with answer keys. The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students.

    • PART 4 – Students are to make a truly wicked/awesome potion using mysterious, weird or downright disgusting ingredients. They need to also include what it does and the directions on how to make it.

This movie is about the Sanderson sisters who were hanged for practicing witchcraft 300 years ago in Salem. Returning to life thanks to a combination of a spell spoken before their demise and the accidental actions of Max, the new kid, the witches have one Halloween night to secure their continuing existence.

How can movies help students learn English?

Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study

    - There are a huge number of movies that have been adapted from books which allow for book to movie comparisons or simply as a reward for finishing the book.

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

    - Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

    - It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real situations. This includes accents different to your own.

    Movies gives a visual context

    - This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context. To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

    Variety and flexibility

    - Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions, debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
