Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

Students must use their math skills to unlock clues that will he;p them find the Ice Queen!

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Multiply Numbers Ending in Zeroes (2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, both ending in zeroes)
  • Clue 2: Convert Time Units
  • Clue 3: Equivalent Fractions (Fill in the missing numerator to make a pair of fractions equivalent)
  • Clue 4: Rounding (Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Hundred Thousands)
  • Clue 5: Continuing Patterns

>> Pack includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, an elimination guide, and printable awards.

How long will this activity take?

The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, move on to the next clue within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom; learn more in the blog post link below:

Great for review, math centers, extra practice, enrichment, homework, the sub tub, or early finishers,

⭐This math mystery story is currently also available for Grades 1-8:

Differentiation Tip: Clue swap across grade levels to adjust the mystery with skills to suit student needs. As long as the clue number being swapped is the same, the mystery will work the same (however, this does not include the Grade 1 pack).

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
