Description
This unit was designed specifically to address NGSS 4-LS1-1: Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support, survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. This unit is appropriate for grades 3-5.
Upper Elementary students learn about the structures animals have to help them with nutrition, self-defense, reproduction, and communication. Activities include:
Activity 1: Animal Structures Sort: This introductory activity gets students focused on specific animal structures and what their function might be.
Activity 2: My Beak is Better Than Yours: Students focus on the beak structure of birds and how this specific structure helps them get food.
Activity 3: Salmon Swim Home: This engaging activity gives students the opportunity to become salmon and use their sense of smell to navigate home.
Activity 4: What is Biomimicry? Reading and questions.
Activity 5: Biomimicry Challenge: Students use animal or plant structures to inspire an invention.
Activity 6: Poster Reports: These reports focus on structures of animals and how they help with nutrition, self-defense, reproduction, and communication. A grading rubric is included.
