HOW THE MATH VIDEOS & WORKSHEETS HELP:

Parents: The most common problem for parents is that they want to help their child with math homework, but they do not understand all of the strategies taught in today’s classrooms. These videos allow parents and students to sit down together and learn different strategies to solve math problems.

Students: Too often students need more time to process math concepts than what can be offered in the classroom. By being able to watch these videos at their own pace and on their own time, students can rewatch problems being solved and pause the videos for the amount of work time that they need.

Teachers: There always seems to be a shortage of time in a classroom. Teachers can use these videos in many ways to help make the most of the time they do have. Some of these ways include as part of a flipped classroom model, for additional practice and review during small groups, centers, or for independent practice time, and for advance the pacing of gifted and talented or high-achieving students.

    Standards

Understand a fraction 1/𝘣 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into 𝘣 equal parts; understand a fraction 𝘒/𝑏 as the quantity formed by 𝘒 parts of size 1/𝘣.
Explain why a fraction 𝘒/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 Γ— 𝘒)/(𝘯 Γ— 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
    Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
