What educators are saying

A wonderful way to MODEL and PRACTICE! Students were engaged and learning the whole time! A resource we will use over and over everyday as we make this a habit during active reading!
I loved this resource. It helped me understand how to teach the types of questions to my struggling readers. The lessons and sorts made my students think and then apply that to the text passages. Thank you so much!

Description

These reading test prep minilessons and bulletin board set of test-prep and reading comprehension strategies will help you prepare students for testing in a way that connects what you have taught students about reading all year long to the skills they will be tested on.

Although I originally developed the test-prep framework and minilessons to prepare my students for their end-of-grade reading test, it has been used successfully as a year-long reading foundation in many classrooms. The before, during, and after reading strategies lessons are perfect for teaching your students how to pre-read, read, and process fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other reading passages or books.

Use this reading test prep unit to review before, during, and after reading comprehension strategies and skills that you have taught students all year long, and provide students with common sense test-taking strategies and ways to think about answering reading test questions. Google Slides for Anchor Charts and question sorting activities with moveable questions included!

The reading comprehension strategies review framework allows you to move from what students KNOW about reading in general to HOW that applies to reading for a standardized, multiple-choice reading comprehension test.

Guide students through the following key questions:

How do we (do this skill)?

How do we do this with a book we are reading/want to read?

How might we do this differently on a standardized test? (Save for later in the year when you implement your full test-prep unit if you want to implement the framework all year long!)

This method considers “standardized reading tests” as another reading genre that helps students develop an understanding of how the test passages are designed. Together, you and your students discover how a test is put together AND how the before, during, and after reading comprehension strategies you have taught them to use all year as intelligent readers still applies in the setting of “test reading.”
