Description
This resource gives students structured practice in solving 3-digit addition and subtraction word problems. This is a tricky skill because it involves both math and reading comprehension. These worksheets encourage students to use multiple problem solving strategies and to show their work!
Each of the word problems involves addition or subtraction within 1000 including:
- addition without regrouping
- addition with regrouping
- subtraction without regrouping
- subtraction with regrouping
- 2 step word problems, mixed operations
These word problems include space to draw a model, use place value, use an open number line, and write an equation. This allows you to see the students' use of strategies from the more concrete to the abstract.
Students also evaluate what the problem is about and identify whether it involves:
- getting more
- taking away
- comparing quantities
- a missing part/number

Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
CCSS3.OA.D.8
Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
