What educators are saying

I loved this for activating critical thinking and appreciated the differentiation to help students begin to make the jump from replacing images with numbers to figuring out the numbers each image represented. Thank you!
I got this to use as a fun activity. My class really liked mystery types of activities. Unfortunately they found it a bit too difficult to do on their own. It was a fun whole class activity though.

Description

Looking for math activities to ENGAGE and CHALLENGE your first and second grade students? Kids LOVE these 24 addition and subtraction math logic puzzle task cards. They will be using algebraic reasoning and not even know it! These task cards are perfect for 1st and 2nd graders to develop a math mindset, promote critical thinking, and provide enrichment opportunities for high achievers and early finishers.

THIS PRODUCT INCLUDES:

  • 24 color addition and subtraction algebraic reasoning task cards
  • 24 B/W cards
  • Digital version in Google Slides™
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

Each math logic puzzle task card contains 4 problems using pictures and numbers. The students must figure out the value of each picture. Students are using addition and subtraction within 20 to solve problems with unknowns in all positions. They are working with equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

These spring logic puzzle task cards are a fun way to challenge your high achievers and are perfect in a center or for early finishers. These activities lay the foundation for problems in which students use variables in mathematical expressions. They align to the Operations and Algebraic Thinking domain in the Common Core.

What are teachers saying…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My kids LOVED these cards!  They enjoyed the challenge and had fun trying to figure it out on their own.” - Sonya K.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “perfect and easy prep...wonderful challenge that kept my students very busy...and thank you for the answers!” - Errin K.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Wonderful opportunity to develop and practice logic skills in the context of symbols representing several unknowns in a series of addition and subtraction problems! Adorable graphics, too!” - Dianna Z.

HOW CAN I USE THIS PRODUCT?

In a Center: Print out the puzzle cards on card stock and laminate or put them in a dry erase pocket. Also, print out the solution cards so students can check their work. Also, print out the response sheets so students can check their work.

As a Morning Warm-up Activity: Project the puzzles on a SmartBoard, use an LCD projector, or use an ELMO. Print out the puzzles on paper and use them as a worksheet. Have students work individually or in pairs.

Think, Pair, Share: Print out the puzzle cards on plain paper or card stock. Give each group of students a puzzle to solve.

For Early Finishers: Have a folder of the puzzles in an early finisher center.

Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
