Description

Numerous subjects taught in Mathematics are widely used throughout the world of sports. This product presents word problems that show examples of 7th to 9th Grade mathematics subjects that are relevant to the 2024 Summer Olympics. The following subjects are covered:

· Understanding Basic Statistical Measures

· Solving Multi-Step Equations

· Calculating the Volume and Surface Area of Spheres

· Calculating Percent Change

The product includes introductory materials, 10 detailed examples, and 10 word- problems that cover these subjects. These pages are then followed by complete answer sheets (not just answer keys) for each problem. In addition to providing math challenges, these examples and word-problems provide background information on the sites, events, and countries that are part of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

All examples and problems are based on the metric system since this is the system that is used in the Olympics. In order to provide a point of reference, a table is provided that shows the relationship between units in the metric system and the U.S. Imperial System which is more familiar to most students.

Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:
Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
