Description

Combining math and science is a natural. With all the excitement surrounding the 2024 total solar eclipse, it only makes sense to extend our math knowledge and skills to the numbers involved with the incredible show that is about to take place in the sky.

This resource contains a Bank of Math Problems for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. It includes 90 math problems (and answers) that involve the following skills:

- Identifying the least and greatest values
- Ordering numbers from least to greatest
- Subtracting to find how much greater than or less than
- Finding elapsed time in years
- Finding ratios
- Dividing to find how many times greater than
- Finding the percent of increase or decrease
- Converting times to different time zones
- Finding elapsed time in hours, minutes, and seconds
- Finding mean, median, mode, range, and interquartile range
- Creating a box-and-whisker plot

These problems are based on the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Data Sheet that is also included in this resource. The data sheet contains numerical facts about thirteen states which will experience totality during the eclipse. (Very tiny slices of Tennessee and Michigan will experience only a very negligible amount of totality, so these states are not included in the data sheet.) Information given about the eclipse in relation to each state includes the following:

- Average width of the path of totality
- Maximum time of duration of totality
- Distance of the center line across the state
- Average speed across the state
- Date of previous total solar eclipse
- Date of next total solar eclipse

The skill level for the 90 problems ranges from 4th to 7th grade. It is just a matter of creating your own worksheets of problems customized to the level of your students by cutting and pasting appropriate problems from the Problem Bank. Or, you can use any of the problems as a template, customize them, and make them more applicable to your situation.

This resource can be used effectively in various settings – whole class instruction, math centers, cooperative learning groups, or as individual student-work. You have the option to allow your students to use calculators for some of the problems.

***Just to be clear, this resource is NOT a worksheet. It is a bank of 90 math problems for you to copy and paste as you create worksheets that are appropriate for the skills and level of your students.

The documents in this resource are in two formats - editable Microsoft Word and PDF.
