What educators are saying

Thanks for your hard work!! This aligned to the film perfectly and I did not have to make any edits!
This was my first time teaching WWI, and I really wanted to show my 7th graders a movie to show them the true war time experience. This packet was thorough, but easy enough to keep the kids engaged with the film.

Description

1917 follows the story of two young men, Lance Corporal Blake and Lance Corporal Schofield, who are given the dangerous task to cross enemy territory and deliver a message to another regiment. Failure to deliver the message in time could result in 1,600 soldiers walking into one of Germany’s traps.

One could use this film during a World History course, World War I Unit, or for an End of the Year film. The film stars George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott, and Mark Strong. The film was written and directed by Sam Mendes.

The film is dedicated to the director’s grandfather, Alfred, who entered WWI at the age of 17 years old. His grandfather actually carried messages across no-man’s land like depicted in the film. The story comes from the “story of a messenger” in his grandfather’s autobiography entitled, Autobiography of Alfred H Mendes 1897-1991.

My movie guide contains 40 questions and an answer key has been included for your convenience. The final question on the movie guide is a debrief question. I have also included a separate worksheet with an additional 10 reflection questions that one could use after viewing the film. PLEASE NOTE- I would not print out the reflection questions and attach to the movie guide since it contain spoilers. Instead, I would print them separately and hand to students after viewing the film.

There is an additional worksheet that goes along with a 10-minute “making of” video clip that is available on YouTube. I saw this movie during its opening weekend and was so intrigued by the filming. I went home that night and spent two hours reading articles and watching YouTube videos on how they made the film. The YouTube Insider video was one I had watched that evening so I decided to include it in case you have curious students as well. There is an answer key for the YouTube video worksheet but there is not one for the reflection questions since it is opinion based. I would allow for up to 3 hours with the activity if you included the reflection questions and the YouTube video in your lesson. This would also allow time for you to debrief the film as a class.

RUNTIME AND RATING- The film's runtime is 119 minutes and it is rated R for violence, some disturbing images, and language.

By purchasing this film, you agree to use it for your classroom use only and will not share with others, claim as your own, or post online. Additional licenses are available for a reduced price.
