Description

13 Colonies: Colonial Governments

Having trouble with the Kahoot link - here is the new one Kahoot made (not my idea:) - https://create.kahoot.it/share/colonial-governments/033ba750-1f22-40ab-9b03-d6b341ad9497

This lesson teaches students about colonial governments in the 13 Colonies. Students will learn about the English influences on colonial governments including: The Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, representative democracy, and English Common Law. Students will also be introduced to The Enlightenment and how philosophers like John Locke, Montesquieu, & Rousseau influenced the Founding Fathers. Students will learn how the earliest settlers took these ideas and put them into practice with the Mayflower Compact and the House of Burgesses. We will look at how colonial governments were controlled by the king and parliament with a look at the different types of colonies and colonial governments: Royal, Charter, and Proprietary and the impact this had on the colonist’s access to self-government and democratic principles. Students will finally learn about the importance of Town Meetings, increased colonial demands for self-government, and the rising tensions with the British.
