There are four main parts:
Vocabulary Posters & Activities:
Introduce the vocabulary words with the real-life photo posters included. You could post these posters around the classroom and have students travel around to match up and define the words in their flip flaps or use them as a center activity. These colorful posters are excellent for a bulletin board display too!
Reading Passages:
Have students read the passages with three different difficulty levels about each region in the 13 Colonies: New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern Colonies. The informational articles focus on each region related to people, natural resources, climate, daily life, crops, houses, schooling, and economy.
There are graphic organizers and activities for students to complete at that center or learning station that ties it all together. Plus there are a map and mystery flaps activity pages to round out the activities. Also, this 13 Colonies Activity Pack includes character studies for the Puritans, Quakers, and the Southern Plantations.
Colonial Jobs:
Students can read about the artisans and craftsmen of the 13 colonies. There are character studies for:
- Basket-makers
- Blacksmiths
- Printers
- Shoemakers
- Tailors
- Silversmiths
There’s a hands-on “Who am I?” activity for students to figure out who each artisan it is from their job description. There’s also mini-focus info about merchants, brick-makers, wig-makers, coopers, town criers, and cabinet-makers that you could use with the Writing Prompt about choosing an apprenticeship.
PowerPoint Presentation:
There's a 100-slide PowerPoint presentation with information about each region: New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern Colonies. It has vocabulary slides and a quiz to check for understanding.
Each slide has colorful scenes to help students connect to the information. The slideshow presentation can be used as a visual representation for the whole class to follow along and complete the organizers at a computer center or even for review at the end of the unit.

Standards Addressed:
Explain the factors that shaped British Colonial America.
a. Identify key reasons why the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies were founded (religious freedom and profit).
b. Compare and contrast colonial life in the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies (education, economy, and religion).
c. Describe colonial life in America of various people such as landowners, farmers, artisans, women, children, indentured servants, slaves, and Native Americans.
