12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS Adapted Book - Christmas Carol Velcro Book - Spec Ed Music

Hey educators!

Thanks for checking out my 12 Days of Christmas Song Activity! :) There are many benefits to reading adaptive books for early readers or students with special needs. I, of course, LOVE to create individualized books that cater towards my kiddos' interests. A few of my students love nursery rhymes and music. One of my students often threw or ripped books, but once we used laminated custom books that catered towards her interests she was able to build not only tolerance but enjoyment! So I knew I HAD to make some for her favourite songs, and I hope your class loves songs too! This song adapted book would be perfect for the Winter season or as a fun literacy, art or music activity!

Adapted books are books that are modified to fit a child's specific needs. They usually include visual supports and tactile objects that allow the student to actively participate in the book. This adapted book is about the Christmas Carol, Twelve Days of Christmas. You can read this winter nursery rhyme book as a class lesson, during circle time, 1:1 to assess reading, or have it as an independent activity! Students are asked to read the book, then match the picture from the PECs on the side!

Follow up their learning with the cute art activity! Students will cut out the pictures and glue them in order of the 12 days of Christmas song! The end product will form a creative "Christmas Tree" triangular shape!

• Build fluency with frequently used sight words or personally meaningful words to the child
• Build vocabulary
• Could be used to teach a skill (ex. Social Story)

EASY PREP

1. Print and cut out the pages & PECs
2. Laminate each sheet and the PECs so you can reuse it year after year & student after student! 
3. Cut around the laminated pieces
4. Add hard velcro on the back of the PECs & soft velcro on the squares of the book.
5. Bind together with coils OR hole punch for duotang/binder.

HOW TO USE: ADAPTED BOOK

• Student will read the sentences OR they can listen to the song & follow along!
• Student will remove the PEC from the right side, to match under each picture. Repeat!

HOW TO USE: ART ACTIVITY

• Students will cut out the boxes, then glue them together to create a “Christmas Tree” triangle shape on extra large construction paper
• Begin glueing the 1 partridge in a pear tree, then glue the 2 turtle doves under it, then 3 french hens under it, etc.
